What is Red Robot Grill?
Red Robot Grill specializes in grilled South African and American fusion cuisine. Available for catered small parties and groups, try out the rooibos rub smoked turkey, Cape Malay pork skewers, or the smoked melktert cheesecake. To braai is the South African act of grilling. It often includes a variety of meats, but the uniqueness lies in the ambiance. To enjoy a braai is to appreciate your meal being cooked over an open flame and relish in the company and time you’re afforded together. Red Robot Grill hopes to expose you to the diverse flavors of South Africa and give you a nibble of the braai experience.
Braaimaster Elizabeth, that's me! I lived in South Africa for several years while I dabbled in a variety of jobs; cello performance, Boy Scout leader, and managing bars. Throughout my time there, I not only learned to cook, but developed a love for the rich and diverse flavors found all over the country. Coming home, I dreamed of peri-peri prawns, mince samosas, and hearty bunny chows. Unable to find accessible South African cuisine here, I took matters into my own hands and began digging out my South African cookbooks and recipes passed down from friends. Having a love for all things braai, I focused on meals cooked over the open fire and their accompanying dishes. Through this, I began blending American barbecue into the picture and the Red Robot Grill concept was born.
In South Africa, originally, the term for a traffic light was “robotic traffic controller” when it was first introduced, as this was replacing the human element of police officers manually conducting traffic intersections. Through time, this term was shortened to “robots”. We feel the red light is a wonderful reminder to “stop and smell the braai.”
The photo above was taken in St Helena Bay, South Africa while braaiing with friends. This embodies the enjoyment of living in the moment and appreciating the process.
